trenchtrotter Posted 14 January , 2012 Share Posted 14 January , 2012 A qualification badge for a gun layer in the artillery. If you look closely at the button you can see the gun device also as opposed to the GS button worn by other services and arms. Regards TT
EDWARD1 Posted 14 January , 2012 Author Share Posted 14 January , 2012 Many thanks trenchtrotter and pardon my ignorance but what did a gun layer do?
Muerrisch Posted 14 January , 2012 Share Posted 14 January , 2012 A gunlayer could be any rank, appointed to the post, at least one per artillery piece, and the right hand man to the NCO [usually a sergeant] directly in charge. The layer could be responsible for either the correct pointing of the piece or ranging [how far] or even, at a pinch, both. He also needed a fuse setter to ensure the shell did what it was supposed to do ..... airburst, explode on impact, delay etc. The badge appears in many forms: one piece "brass", two-piece "brass", and khaki/white/brown worsted. There are proper artillery experts on the Forum, and I am NOT one of them!
