Remembered Today:

Confirmation of uniform requested

Geoff D Taylor

Recommended Posts

I need confirmation of the unit represented by this group.

I suspect that it is Royal Garrison Artillery.

If confirmed then it is likely that the picture is consistent with...

Initials: J

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Gunner

Regiment/Service: Royal Garrison Artillery

Unit Text: 114th Heavy Bty.

Date of Death: 12/06/1917

Service No: 95540

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: F. 15.

Geoff Taylor

Carine, Western Australia

If anything first instinct is Royal Engineers.

Agree, I don't see any 'Gunners' on this photograph. Although black and white the dress jackets appear Red consist with Royal Engineers. Could be a fortress unit attached to RGA.

Instant replies...

From what you have said, it may be that this is the WC Cable laying unit, Royal Engineers.

The man above the X would be my Grand Uncle Francis Taylor, Service number = 78670

The cap badges seem possible (given the poor resolution), but I am not familiar with dress unifor seen in this photo. I have only seen pictures of him with bandoleers consistent with his mounted duties with the cable laying unit.

Geoff, There you go. I think you can safely say the men on the photograph are Sappers not Gunners. If you are aware of the rivalry between those units you were treading on dodgy ground.
