gord97138 Posted 28 July , 2004 Share Posted 28 July , 2004 I found this photo of a Whippet Tank-Was wondering how effective were they! History!-Weight and speed? Type of guns? Photo from "The Great War" magazine-Dec.21st,1918 issue. gordon
Guest AmericanDoughboy Posted 28 July , 2004 Share Posted 28 July , 2004 I do not believe those are Whippet Tanks. Those tanks are the French Renault Tank mainly used by the French and American soldiers. A whippet tank looks quite different: As for history of affectiveness in battle, I do not know. -Doughboy

The Whippet had the advantage of being speedy cf Mark IV but was lightly armed - two MGs max. Unfortunately they had the unhappy habit of catching fire when hit by effective artillery, maybe due to the lighter armour plate, and many of the crews were burned. The History of the Tank Corps has some good sections on the Whippet and is worth buying for further reading. The Naval & Military Press have recently re-printed it. gord97138 Posted 28 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 28 July , 2004 Doughboy: You may very well be right about the tank pictures from the 1918 "Great War" magazine! I wonder if they just added the name for their article? From a further search on the name "Whippet" tank I found this: WHIPPET Specifically, the medium mark A British tank first seen in 1917, but later applied generally to any type of light tank, including the French Renault. gordon Ian: Thanks also for the info-I appreciate it! gordon
