I was not referencing a lokomotive when using the term "steam engine"; merely it's mode of combustion.  The visible wheel certainly would not affix to a rail!  I assumed it was the remains of a traction engine as you suggest.

Fascinating photos. The sheer volume of lost wealth in material and property; debris scattered everywhere, sometimes reused for makeshift cover, always blows my mind.
