Remembered Today:

Phillips, Arthur William

As I work my way through the names on West Berkshire war memorials I have come across another possible noncommemoration:

Arthur William Phillips is commemorated (as William Arthur) on the village memorial in Bradfield, Berks (http://westberkshire....php?link=WB006) and on a roll of honour in the village church (http://westberkshire....php?link=WB301)

The inscriptions are quite informative (for more than most):

Wm Ar Phillips 21617 11th Corps Cyclist Bn Killed May 23 1918 Aire

William Arthur Phillips 11th Corps Cyclist Batt, May 23rd, Killed accidently

I have found his death in the registration index:

Deaths for year(s) 1918

Name:
Arthur W Phillips

Ref:
Volume: M.6 Page: 361

Source:
GRO War Death Army Other Ranks (1914 to1921)

Phillips, Arthur W, Pte, 21617, ACC, 1918, M.6 361

And Soldiers Who Died in the Great War has:

Name: Arthur William Phillips

Birth Place: Bradfield, Berks

Residence: Hungerford, Berks

Death Date: 23 May 1918

Death Location: France & Flanders

Enlistment Location: Newbury, Berks

Rank: Private

Regiment: Army Cyclist Corps

Number: 21617

Theatre of War: Western European Theatre

Comments: Formerly 208943, Bucks Yeo.

His service record (at Ancestry) even gives a report from the enquiry into the circumstances of his death.

With all this is should be simple to find an entry in the CWGC database, but I can't. So the question arises - is he there?

I have tried Philip, Phillip, Philips and Phillips (initials: AW, WA, W & A) without luck - there are eight AW Phillips, three from 1918 - but none come close to matching other details.

Any ideas?

Phil

Okay - I have found him - as W R Phillips! Page 21 of his service record shows the mistake (how they got from A W to W R bewilders me).

Any advise on getting the CWGC to correct this record and, eventually, the stone?
