stevehowarth Posted 23 July , 2004 Share Posted 23 July , 2004 I am researching 2nd Lt. Richard Welbury Shuttleworth, from Earby in Lancashire. He died as a result of a crash whilst testing a new machine at Stamford in Lincolnshire, in August 1918. Having no experience of RFC matters, I would appreciate any advice/help concerning possible records of such accidents on home soil. Thanks, Steve
Dolphin Posted 23 July , 2004 Share Posted 23 July , 2004 Steve 2Lt R W Shuttleworth of No 1 Training Depot Station (formerly 9th Lancashire Fusiliers) was killed in an accident while flying RE8 B7695 on 16 August 1918. 2Lt E W Drummond was in the observer's seat at the time but was not injured. I hope this information, from "Airmen Died in the Great War", helps. Gareth
stevehowarth Posted 24 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 24 July , 2004 Thanks Gareth for the helpful reply. Can anybody tell me, from the number (RE8 B7695), the type of plane involved. Steve
Guest Pete Wood Posted 24 July , 2004 Share Posted 24 July , 2004 Steve The number B7695 is the serial. The aeroplane is a RE8. You can see a picture of a RE8 by clicking here
