Very Simply Vince, it's the cap badge of the West Yorkshire Regt and was used from circa 1880 till 1958.

As Graham says, it is an officers cap badge in superior metals (silver and gilt ). You can read about the West Yorkshire Regiment here:

Hello all, thanks for the quick and informative answers. The person who owned them originally claimed he was a Major with this regiment, perhaps during the Great War, but I cannot find his name on any roll. His last known name was Phillip STANLAKE.
