AUSTRALIAN LIGHT HORSE FELT HAT

Recommended Posts

A collecting friend has this felt hat which is believed to be Austalian light horse.Looking for opinions and possibly a value for insurance purposes. Its provenance is that it came with the effects of a New Zealand Mounted Rifle trooper who served in Palestine in WW1.Possibly that trooper swapped his NZ felt hat for this one. If you want pictures of some NZMR uniforms hats and equipment read my thread on the New Zealand Mounted Rifles forum ,NZMR.org

cheers Iain

Dimensions are wrong for a Slouch Hat.

Suspect that it may be a South African Hat as they wore something similar.

There is a image of one of the Shot at Dawn on display in the Cells at the Poperinge Town Hall in Belgium that looks like one of these hats.

Must admit that I noticed it but did not read the caption. Perhaps one of our members in the area could let us know who he was.

Regards, Peter

Hi

By the press stud.... this felt hat is British made and 3 lines of stitching.....

I am sure Australians would have been supplied British made items as New Zealander's were with felt hats for the lemon squeezer

I had an indisputably genuine 1918-dated slouch hat - now owned by Krithia - that was made in the UK (Chester IIRC) and with this kind of stud. At that point in the war, it had to be for the Aussies rather than for those that wore the pre-War TF kind.

Cheers,

GT.

It is believed that the hat was bought back from the Middle East ,at the end of WW1,by Trooper J Weir who served in the Specialist section of NZMR.He sailed with the 25th Mounted rifles reinforcements and his tunic (which was found with the hat) has three overseas service chevrons. This indicates he has returned well after the war is over. Now his service file is not yet available online ,so i can not verify if he served solely in the Egpyt /Sina/Palestine ,but if he did he would more likely have gotten the hat of a Australian Cavelry soldiier. If he indeed had leave to England then there is a chance that it is other branches of the Australian army.

It has also been checked by a uniform collector/ expert who concludes that it is ALH.Still i would like to hear other authorities to hear their opinions.

A couple of years ago I had the experience of examining a genuine British equivelent. It had seen service in sunny climes and had gone quite pink in colour with only little areas retaining any semblance of the original colour...power of the sun. I suspect this has seen little exposure to the harsh sun?

While there is not excessive fading on the felt hat,it does show some patches on the high points. The photo's were taken indoors with a flash,so may the colourings may be darker than would show to the eye.Still its in fairly good nick despite missing most of the sweatband and the chinstrap.I believe its spent most of the last ninety years in a cupboard of the same family .

I I have no doubts that this is a genuine WW1 hat aquired by a NZ soldier in WW1 ,in likelyhood in the threatre that he served, namely Palestine.

Here is an example of a ALH hat in a museum, note the pugaree is the same.
