skinumb Posted 3 November , 2011 Share Posted 3 November , 2011 Attached is a copy of a photo of my granddad in (or on leave from) Salonika in 1917/1918. The date I'm guessing from his service chevrons. I'm wondering if anyone can solve the puzzle of what the writing means. He was a serjeant with 11 Cameronians Scottish Rifles, which was part of 77 Brigade of 26 Division. I don't know which Company. He went out as a private soldier to France in August 1914 with 1st Btn SR, and presumably transfered to 11th as an experienced NCO, most likely sometime in 1915. skinumb Posted 4 November , 2011 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2011 My guess is A Comp'y Sylvester Stretcher but I can't make head or tail of that! Keith Me either. I thought maybe a Sylvester Stretcher with a reg. no. 915, but there are no Stretcher surnames on the Medal Roll. There's 200+ of Sylvester surnames (yeah surprised me too), but none with 915 in the number, and only one with the Scottish Rifles, Harry Sylvester, #241846. I've also searched the 1891 and 1901 England, Wales and Scotland Census's, for Shetcher, Sketcher, Shiliher and other variants of likley speelings. So I thought maybe placenames.
