Ausjock Posted 24 October , 2011 Share Posted 24 October , 2011 Hi all, Forgive me if I make any mistakes in this topic as it is my first post. I have recently started researching my family and have come across a couple of photos of Great Uncles on my mother's side who, I have been informed, died during the Great War. I know approximately when they were born but am not sure of when or where they died. If I could pinpoint the uniform it would make it much easier to track their details down as there are a few people with the same name. The Above is my Great Uncle Robert Reid, born about 1886 in Glasgow. Thank you in advance all for your assistance
roughdiamond Posted 24 October , 2011 Share Posted 24 October , 2011 He's from a non kilted Trews wearing Regt so Highland Light Infantry, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Royal Scots, don't think he'd Cameronians as there's a light stripe in the Tartan, he's wearing a warm weather jacket and Pith helmet, suggesting middle east or far east (India) and he has a "2 year good conduct chevron" so possibly the photo is of a Regular, pre War. FROGSMILE Posted 24 October , 2011 Share Posted 24 October , 2011 It seems most likely to be HLI, whose MacKenzie tartan had the white over check that shows quite well in the photo. The Leslie of the KOSB had more subtle, pale overstripe(s), as did the Hunting Stewart of the Royal Scots, neither of which showed so well in B&W photography from a distance. The Royal Scots Fusiliers were still wearing Black Watch trews at that time.
roughdiamond Posted 24 October , 2011 Share Posted 24 October , 2011 Had a look on the Scottish National War Memorial which usually names a place of birth and previous Regiments, I found 5 men with Glasgow and 1 with Rutherglen, 4 of those had parents names and addresses' on their CWGC entries, these are the links: - http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=830469 he was previously 56547 Pte Robert Reid HLI (the only one with a HLI connection. http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1550824 http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=513588 http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=19219 The other 2 are: - http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1644002 This man's Will form is held at the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and should list a next of kin, but he's from a kilted Regt, he was also 277946 A&SH, kilted again. http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=603480 This man was born in Rutherglen, has an early service number and was KOSB who wore trews, his Will is not held at NAS. One other observation of the photo is the French on the card frame, could it have been taken in Egypt?
Tom A McCluskey Posted 6 November , 2011 Share Posted 6 November , 2011 Hi Ausjock, The soldier in the photos is KOSB. The lined tartan sett that you see is from Leslie tartan - the tartan worn by this regiment. The camera picks up the white of this tartan, but not the red, hence the parallel-lined effect. I hope this is of use. Aye Tom McC
