Formation badge question

I have a question concerning formation patches. In the photo below, the three individuals on the right have an armband just above the elbow. Does anyone know what this signifies? All the soldiers appear to be Canadian and the three in question have division/battalion patches on their upper arms. I can also positively say the soldier with the check mark above him is a member of the 44th Battalion CEF. Any information is appreciated. Out of curiosity, any idea what battalion the two soldiers flanking the one with the check mark are from?

The armbands not sure, the divisional patches I think are either (being a BW pic) -

5th ( Western Cavarly) Battalion.

If the square and circle are the same colour or :-

1st (Western Ontario) Battalion /

13th (Royal Highlanders) Battalion

If the square and circle are different colours.

This is for 1st Division units. Other divisions 2nd, 3rd have very similar patches but again different colours

so it is very difficult to say without knowing the exact colour(s).

They actually could be 44th Battalion / 4th Division as it is the same patch but this time all green.

I cannot see any shade diffrerence between the two shapes but it can be misleading take a look at this link.

If you look at each division you will see what I'm getting at.

Simon.
