20th July 1914

On this day

Departure of Fleet for sea exercises, led by King George in Royal Yacht

14 year old Dickie Battenberg [Mountbatten] was at that time at the RNC Osborne and after mobilisation had joined HMS New Zealand from which he saw the Royal Review:“59 battleships, 55 cruisers, 78 destroyers, 16 submarines and a host of lesser craft……”

Winston Churchill recalled “It took more than six hours for this armada, every ship decked with flags and crowded with blue-jackets and marines, to pass with bands playing at 15 knots before the Royal Yacht, while overhead the naval seaplanes and aeroplanes circled continuously.”
