Guest Tim DV Posted 19 July , 2004 Share Posted 19 July , 2004 I know it's difficult but let's give it a try! I have bought some year ago a militaria collection. In that collection was also this medal.. Now, would it be possible to find more about this person or group? It's a British War Medal, I have also the Victory Medal who one time belonged to the same person.. 35692 (Can I find more info with this number?) PTE. (? Private) G. S. HORDON. (? don't think this is his full surname?? also because the dot at the end, so wich surname is common in Great-Brittain wit HORDON....?) W. RID. R (? West Ridge Regiment) thanks a lot! HERITAGE PLUS Posted 19 July , 2004 Share Posted 19 July , 2004 Tim HORDON is the full surname. He served as a Private in this regiment (details from the mother site). http://www.1914-1918.net/dukes.htm Dave
priv Posted 19 July , 2004 Share Posted 19 July , 2004 Tim, Checked on the online Medal Index Cards (MIC) at the PRO and you are pretty much spot on: Private George S. Hordon Serial Number : 35692 West Riding Regiment. Nothing came up on the Commonwealth War Graves though. James You can buy the MIC online for £ 3.50 at www.pro.gov.uk if you wish. Guest Tim DV Posted 19 July , 2004 Share Posted 19 July , 2004 Is there a change I can find out to wich battalion he belonged? By the digits or so?
shinglma Posted 19 July , 2004 Share Posted 19 July , 2004 Tim The Medal Index Card (MIC) gives the index reference for the Medal Roll. The Medal Roll lists the recipients of each award and (normally) crucially lists the battalion the recipient served in. All are stored at the National Archive in Kew. From the downloadable MIC it will be possible to look up the individual on the medal rolls at Kew and ascertain the battalion. If you can't make it in person perhaps some other kind soul might be able to do it fo you. I would offer to do it myself but won't be there for a couple of weeks or so. If it can wait that long let me know. Mike S
