Grandpacarr Posted 5 October , 2011 Share Posted 5 October , 2011 Could anyone please help me with with the identification of these corporals chevrons which are very much smaller than the normal types I have included one photo with a penny to help with the scale etc. These chevrons I believe to be ww1 as I bought them via ebay along with a few ww1 R.A.M.C. items, I have included a scan of all the items I bought in the group which may help to i.d.the chevron`s use. Regards Grandpacarr.
Khaki Posted 5 October , 2011 Share Posted 5 October , 2011 They are "service chevrons" not corporal chevrons. Usually used to denote length of service. Specific identification by others will probably follow, khaki
john gregory Posted 5 October , 2011 Share Posted 5 October , 2011 I do'nt think the red chevrons or the RAMC black on khaki slip-on are WW1. I believe they are WW2, someone will be along shortly to explain better. JG

Regards Grandpacarr. Hi Grandpacarr The easy one first: before WW2, metal shoulder titles worn on the other ranks Service Dress and Khaki Drill uniforms were one of the most common methods used to display the wearer's Corps/Regiment or formation. When the Battle Dress was introduced in March 1938 metal shoulder titles were not intended to be worn on its shoulder straps. At the begining of hostilities, and as an economy measure directions towards saving metal and also as a security device, Slip on Titles of Khaki cloth with lettering in black thread had been introduced to be worn, on the Kharki Battle Dress. The two Service Chevrons you have, are WW2, and would be worn the other way round, as to what you show in your photo, they were issued as: Single Chevrons, or has sets of Two, Three or Four, Chevrons. The larger RAMC, looks to be the that of a medical orderly, but looking at its condition, its either a copy, or its not what I have said , the smaller one, I can't at the moment find any thing on?.
