Modern Maps at 1:25000 or better

Rovert,

Thanks for posting the Geoportail link. It is a good find. I am just following a 1918 brigade advance on the Ancre-Somme junction using the Cartes-IGN overlay, which has very intuitive contour shading and is in much better condition (obviously) than the McMaster trench maps. Every so often I overlay the Minutes Etat-Major of 1900 at about 70% opacity and see how the villages, woods and roads would have appeared back then. If I want I can then overlay or switch to the IGN air photos.

The only trick I found by trial and error is that scrolling with two maps overlayed is cumbersome. Sometimes it works but usually nothing happens. Simply select only 1 overlay, move to where you want to go and switch the other back on. My knowledge of French is on par with my military history, but I found this French-only site easy to navigate, with a bit of experimentation.

Once again, thanks.

Hi all

Has anyone found a website where you can print a small section of a good quality large scale map of Belgium.

I use: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ for the UK which is excelent.

or: http://www.geoportai...annelid=5063351 for France which is even better.

Thanks

Rovert

Dear Rovert

The French site is great for giving detailed maps of historical villages before being destroyed. Thanks for posting this is great to overlay on a modern map, Esp around Verdun.

Regards

Guy
