Dave,

By 1915 there were 5 Marks of purpose built bicycles in service. Each varying slightly in detail nor differing much from civilan models.

However, it was not uncommon, particularly in TF units for the bicycles to be supplied by the soldier. In this case "Cyclist Training" laysdown certain minimum requirements that a cycle must meet should he or the TFA supply a bicycle ouside of normal WO channels.

The most commonly used was the BSA mark IV. However, it had specific front and rear carriers and rifle clips.

All the best,

Tim

I`ve just returned from a bike ride and found the above thread very interesting. A few points occur:-

1/ I never imagined the officers were on bikes too. Sword strapped to the downtube?!

2/ A bit infra dig for the CO when he passes other officers mounted on sleek chargers!

3/ I get regular punctures. A battalion of men on those tyres and those roads must have had oodles of them.

4/ Any idea how far they`d go on a typical day`s march (ride)?

5/ It says they carried Lewis guns. How on earth did they do that?
