Imperial German Officer

Hello to the forum.

The gentleman in the photograph is as far as I know a Prussian Officer. I wonder if one of our learned members could tell me what is his rank, and what medals is he wearing.

TIA for any information...Aye Rob.

Without a closeup I can only tell you he was Infantry and got the EKII (I think). Any chance of a close up of his medals and the collar and the Schulterklappen?

Rob,

I would disagree with Daniel regarding him being an infantry officer (square peaked Pickelhaube rules out Prussian infantry). My first impression is that he is an "Unterinspektor" (in the rank of Feldwebel)of one of the branches of the military administration. The shoulder boards appear to be of the "Offizierstellvertreter" variety as worn by the Unterzahlmeister/Unterinspektor etc. The collar patch is a litte irregular in that it is piped on all four sides and in any case would not be regulation wear for an Unterinspektor.

My friend Andreas from Feldgrau-forum has the same impression as Glenn. He means it could be a deputy official (Beamtenstellvertreter).

There were common soldiers in positions of officials in the military administration. They had a 16mm wide shoulder straps with lace. The helmets had no official badge (mini-eagle) but the normal measure of an army-eagle.

Furthermore, they wore the uniform of the sub-inspectors ( Infantry officer sword and a shiny mirror collar). So Andreas.

Very mysterious this uniform regulations. :(

Kind regards

Fritz

Fritz, Glenn and Daniel.Thank you all for your input. Here is a close up of the medals collar and shoulderboards. I cant get it any closer as it starts to blur. What are the decorations he is wearing.

Thanks for your help Aye Rob.

  • 2 weeks later...

The third medal / cross is more than likely a:

Prussian Dienstauszeichnungen 1913-1920

1 Klasse für den Soldatenstand nach 15 Dienstjahren, Kreuz.

Prussian Military service cross:-

Other Ranks Service Cross, I Class, for 15 years service on a cornflower blue ribbon.

Is it possible to scan the entire picture at high resolution and send to me by email, so I can attempt to id the other awards?

Connaught Stranger. :D
