Hi all,

I have P'08 sword and on the inside of the bowl (guard?) is stamped ' 5.31.' 'Y. GW.' '212' any thoughts about what they mean? I believe the letters would be the regiment, but the numbers I have no idea about at all. Also on the ricasso, apart from inspection stamps are three dates '13 '15 and '17 what do they mean?

Brimstone,

Based on my limited knowledge, I would say that "5.31" indicates an inspection date of 31 May and the "13, 15 and 17" are year dates. The "Y/GW/212" would mean Yeomany/Glasgow/[rack number] 212. I will be interested to learn what the experts have to say.

All the best,

Gary

Don't think that 5/31 is a day/month date, as this is USA style, not UK - i.e., 5/31 = May 31 = USA, but UK would be 31/5 = 31st May. I suspect the 5/31 may be a month/year reissue date as on bayonets, i.e., re-issued May, 1931.

Again, based on what happens with bayonets, the numbers on the ricasso may be year dates, indicating original issue in 1913, re-issue in 1915 and again in 1917.

BUT, I am assuming that swords were stamped like bayonets, and so I could be completely and utterly wrong, and so I stand ready to be corrected!

I'd certainly go along with the sword being unit marked to the Glasgow Yeomanry, and the '13, '15 and '17 year marks would all be re-issue dates.

The other numbers are harder to determine without actually seeing a photo because the manner in which they are placed can often be the difference.

However the 212 is most probably a rack number, while I would speculate that the "5.31" could be an earlier 'troop' marking, but then I'm only guessing.

Sorry I can't add much further, the Y. over GW. over 212 is in the normally accepted format for a Yeomanry regiment marking with a rack number below.

Unfortunately I am not sure what the 5.21 marking above is supposed to represent. Its not something that I'm familiar with but it could be a 'sword thing'.?

Cheers, S>S
