squirrel Posted 18 August , 2011 Share Posted 18 August , 2011 Can any kind soul let me know what type of shell would have been fired from the shell case/cartridge and what gun it would have been fired from. Unsure about use in WW1 as it is apparently marked 1910. Any inforamtion greatfully received.

18th Battalion Posted 18 August , 2011 Share Posted 18 August , 2011 The image is too small to make out any details; it would help if you can give the dimensions and what markings are stamped on the base.

squirrel Posted 19 August , 2011 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2011 Picture sent Rich. Much appreciated. Dimensions are (approx): height 345 mm to base 85mm width across base 75mm across top markings 75 DE C 1 RS L190 1910 R There are two other markings Rs crossed through and one has Sd or could be Sp beneath it. French 75mm ? Presumably photo will confirm what it is 18 Battalion?
Torrey McLean Posted 19 August , 2011 Share Posted 19 August , 2011 Hello - It is indeed a French 75x350 shell case for the M 1897 75mm field gun. If the headstamp markings are "ARS" instead of "1 RS" then it was made in Rennes. As you stated, it was manufactured in 1910. Regards, Torrey
squirrel Posted 19 August , 2011 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2011 Many thanks - it is definitely a "continental" "1" RS stamped on it.
