Guest March1918 Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 Something a little different. I shall be in a good position to visit the battlefields of Asiago, on the Piave and at Vittorio Veneto second week of August for the first time. Apart from my grabbing some war dairies and contemporary maps does anyone have knowledge of this area advising on the interesting sites? Also be able to take photos if anyone interested. Marco Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 Hello Peter, Italy: best ww1 holiday in the last 15 years: http://www.xs4all.nl/~aur/Battlefields/italytravel.htm The page is 800 kb big, so depending on your connection it might take some time to download. Guest March1918 Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 Hi Marco Wow! That was quick (got broadband of course). Will take some time to digest but the pasta first! Now all I need is the translation 'How do I get to ............?' and I'm outahere. Feeling confident I can find my way around here. About as confident as finding St Sever at Rouen where I have an RFC guy to look up! Many thanks Peter
Marco Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 Hello Peter, Let's talk again when you have been to St. Sever! The mentioned Asiago book from the Battleground Europe series is a must for only a tenner. And although it was ALL good and Asiago has as a bonus the CWGC cemeteries unlike those in France , I must say that's it's worth trading one Asiago day for one of the mountains like Pasubio, which is relativly close by. Have a memorable time! Regards, Marco
Kate Wills Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 You are guaranteed a memorable holiday Peter. The area is packed with things to see, and the scenery is spectacularly beautiful. I was completely overawed by the terrain contested by these two brave armies, and if you get caught in a mountain storm, just head for one of the forts, where you can happily spend an afternoon. paul guthrie Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 The BE Asiago book is by my friend Francis McKay, he has another BE Touring Italian front. An absolute must is restored Fort Belvedere to the north, site has to be seen + fort is great. We are going back to Asiago September.
Guest March1918 Posted 14 July , 2004 Share Posted 14 July , 2004 Thanks guys, I'm beginning to regret buying so many books on Normandy which is the opener. I could easily have picked up Asiago and probably still will. Problem is this was only supposed to be a stop over. Family are on the way to Croatia and Kate will understand that my wife is very understanding but military matters are most incomprehensible so I have to disguise it somehow. This may not be too difficult as from memory this is an area of stunning scenery as you both confirm but I still have to get back to the Western Front on the way back!! Problems, problems -- give me more. Peter
