This photo (from Michael Stedman`s Manchester Pals)shows a group in "casual civvies". Close examination shows, however, that several men are wearing what appears to be the same (very tasteful!) cardigan. Is it possible that these were issued in the early days of "issue what you can get"?

Co-Operative Wholesale Society....nowadays part of the Co-op group, which includes food shops, travel stores, funeral directors (the Coop is the largest in the country), the Ccop bank (which also includes Britannia Building Society), Coop pharmacies and what used to be Somerfield stores.

Come a long way from Toad lane Rochdale in 1844!
