dave ricketts Posted 10 August , 2011 Share Posted 10 August , 2011 Can anyone help me track down the date that George Rogers was commissioned in the Durham Light Infantry? He was a pre-war DLI SNCO. I have found his MIC, which shows that he went to France on 23rd August 1917 and joined the 15th Battalion. I have found an entry in the London Gazette (LG 29653 p 6708) showing that he (G. Rogers) was promoted from 2/Lt to T/Lt whilst serving with a Cadet Battalion with an effective date of 6th July 1916. I have found subsequent entries through to the early 1930s when he retired. However, his commissioning date eludes me.WO338 shows his record is, as expected, closed. (Family folklore suggests he served in WW2, but I haven't any LG evidence to support this - he would have been in his late 50s by then.) I know some of you like a Gazette challenge.... Old Owl Posted 10 August , 2011 Share Posted 10 August , 2011 Hi Dave, According to the December,1915 Army List he was commissioned into the regular army and is shown under 1st and 2nd Battalions, this gives his commission date as 9th April,1915. By October,1917, he is shown as Adj. and Qr Mr Cadet Bn, still under 1st and 2nd Bns with the date 21st Jan.,1917. Hope this is what you are looking for? Old Owl Posted 10 August , 2011 Share Posted 10 August , 2011 Hi Dave, Just checked up in some later Army Lists: Feb.,1919, he is still under 1st and 2nd Bns but is shown as Temp Capt Offr.Cadet Bn., 24th May,1918. May,1922, he is still under 1st and 2nd Bns but is now shown as Captain, 4th April,1921, and appears to be attached to the 1st Bn because he has (1) before his name which is the normal interpretation of this prefix. So you may well be correct that he did continue to serve through until and including WW2, unfortunately however I have no further info at this end. Good luck, Robert

dave ricketts Posted 11 August , 2011 Author Share Posted 11 August , 2011 Robert/Steve, Thanks for the further information. Steve - I knew somebody would crack the Gazette Search Engine! (It can be so frustrating, but none the less a most valuable tool for us.) Cheers, Dave
