potty5 Posted 6 August , 2011 Share Posted 6 August , 2011 Hi - can anybody recommend a book or internet site regarding Britain during WW1 (Home Front) or an article written regarding munitions, rationing, food riots, conscription, air raids etc. Thanks, potty5
John-B-Rooks Posted 6 August , 2011 Share Posted 6 August , 2011 A book that probably covers most of the areas that you are interested in within a single volume might be Blighty - British Society in the Era of the Great War by Gerard J DeGroot, Longman, London and New York 1996. ISBN 0 582 06137 7 (paperback - a case-bound version was also available). There are probably one or two newer works than this but Blighty is fairly comprehensive. centurion Posted 6 August , 2011 Share Posted 6 August , 2011 A general book that covers all of these is "The Home Front in the Great War - Aspects of the conflict 1914 - 1918" by David Bilton 2003 published by Pen and Sword. I picked my copy up in Hay on Wye for £7. at the Cinema bookshop (allegedly the largest 2nd hand book store in the world). So far I've only used it to dip into for reference rather than sit down and read it from cover to cover but to miss quote the immortal Charley Drake "it seems quite good". Dolphin Posted 6 August , 2011 Share Posted 6 August , 2011 Potty5 You could look for: Dear Old Blighty by E S Turner, ISBN 0 7181 1879 0; and Home Front 1914-1918 by Ian Beckett, ISBN 1 903365 81 3. I hope this is useful. Gareth
