Staffsyeoman Posted 27 July , 2011 Share Posted 27 July , 2011 Looks like the L badge of a Gun Layer of the Royal Artillery (not possible to determine whether Field or Horse from this picture) And two Good Conduct stripes indicating 5 years' of same? Pity his sun helmet isn't side-on as there might have been a pugaree (the ribbon around it) flash.

However he is dressed for mounted duty with a riding whip across his thighs, riding breeches, spurs, and leather gaiters to protect the lower legs. This seems puzzling as the 'Drivers' of the teams pulling the guns were a distinct breed and separate to the 'Gunners' who crewed the guns. Perhaps he changed role or completed a Layers course to be multi-employable. I do not think he is a cavalryman.
auchonvillerssomme Posted 27 July , 2011 Share Posted 27 July , 2011 Are they 'ball' buttons?
FROGSMILE Posted 27 July , 2011 Share Posted 27 July , 2011 Are they 'ball' buttons? They might be (from the shadowing and size, but hard to be sure) and that would indicate Royal Horse Artillery, who affected a 'Hussars' style in their dress, including ball buttons.
