Mike763222 Posted 26 July , 2011 Share Posted 26 July , 2011 Hello everyone. I really would appreciate your collective expertise. I'm hoping that I can upload a pic of a uniform and, if so, I need any help you can give in identifying rank, regiment, what the chest medal ribbons signify, the collar tabs and the cuff badges. If I don't manage to upload the image, it can be found at http://coastofconflict.com/WW1 or here Thanks Mike

Mike763222 Posted 26 July , 2011 Author Share Posted 26 July , 2011 Many thanks - even though I was hoping for another answer! Mike
Steven Broomfield Posted 26 July , 2011 Share Posted 26 July , 2011 You can have a different answer, but it would be wrong. Seriously, it looks as if you have his head and shoulders somewhere - if you post a decent-sized scan of him, it might be possible to identify him. Although your links are somewhat pixillated (shades of Mr Deeds there), it looks as if he has an MC, so the first ribbon might be a DSO. A decorated Staff Lt Colonel might be recognised by someone here. Out of interest, what (or whom) did you hope for?
Staffsyeoman Posted 27 July , 2011 Share Posted 27 July , 2011 ..and if the resolution is good enough we may get a clue from the buttons too.

Mike763222 Posted 27 July , 2011 Author Share Posted 27 July , 2011 Thank you all for such a mine of information. I am posting a couple more pics as requested. These show our man alongside General Alfred Knox. Part of the Siberian Military Mission of 1918/9. In the second pic he is standing alongside Knox (who is wearing a fur hat). Sorry, but no higher res pics. I don't know his name. I had hoped that he might have been a Major. Still, I've got far more from you guys than I dared hope for. Ron Clifton Posted 28 July , 2011 Share Posted 28 July , 2011 Hello Mike If you are anywhere near Kew, you might like to look in this file in the War Diaries: PART IX: NORTH RUSSIA AND SIBERIA GENERAL HEADQUARTERS WO 95/5419 WO 95/5419 Branches and Services WO 95/5419 General Staff 1918 Aug. - 1919 Sept. WO 95/5419 Adjutant and Quarter Master General 1918 Oct. - 1919 Sept. If he really was on Gen Knox's staff, and not a visiting battalion CO (but then he wouldn't have the tabs) there can't be many officers who would fit the bill - lieut-col in a Scottish regiment. In that case, he should be named somewhere in the diary. Failing that, try one of these: ELOPE FORCE WO 95/5423 Headquarters Branches and Services: General Staff 1918 July - Sept. SYREN FORCE WO 95/5424 Headquarters Branches and Services: General Staff 1918 June - 1919 Oct. DVINA FORCE WO 95/5428 Headquarters Branches and Services: General Staff 1918 Oct. - 1919 Aug. SIBERIA WO 95/5433 British Military Mission (VLADIVOSTOCK) 1919 May - Oct. Good luck! Ron
