Hi

I have found this medal card for JOHN WILLIAM MARSH he was born in 1879 in Atherton Lancashire

He is my friends grandfather although they never knew him. John W Marsh survived the war but died before my friend was born in 1950.

My friend says that John W Marsh was awarded the military medal and that another member of the family has it.

could you tell me from looking at this card if he did receive the military medal and if so how can I find out why.

tried to upload the image but i was unsuccessful

thanks

Linda

MM NA MiC MM Link

It would appear he was awarded the MM

London Gazette Promulgation 1916 for MM

MM London Gazette Header

It is a September LG Promulgation ,which suggests a Somme award

Unfortunately most MMs of this War are untraceable as to the reason for award {Officially} however some success can often be found from local papers of the time from where he lived before enlistment,as press releases of the time sometimes gave brief details of the circumstance of the award,if you are lucky.. and very occassionally in the War Diaries of the Battalion concerned.

The information on the post by Harry Betts was edited a couple of times after i had put my post. I wasn't being rude and not reading it .
