Remembered Today:

Swanwick War Memorial, Derbyshire

Hi,

This new post is for Steve Morse, as I think it might be of some use for the project he is doing. Please find attached photographs of the Swanwick war memorial in Derbyshire which may be of interest.

This first photograph is of the memorial itself, and unfortunately the plaque isn't too clear. It reads '1914 - 1918' 'Remember O Lord these thy servants who died for us and grant them thine eternal rest'

And these two are close ups of the name plaques on the other side of the memorial

Hope this helps, and good luck with your research

Hi,

Unfortunately those are the only panels on the memorial when we photographed it in 2005. It looked like these panels were relatively new and had been screwed directly onto an earlier inscription. There could be another memorial inside the church, but it was locked when we visited.

I was a bit surprised at how different this is compared to the War Memorial.

Hopefully, someone locally can pass this on if they wish to see whether a further update is required.

Kevin - an impressive bit of research. I can help a little with the Derbyshire Yeomanry (I have researched over 1,500 of them)

1. Sgt Ainslie Elliott would have died in the attack on Scimitar Hill at Suvla Bay Gallipoli. The regiment was dismounted in Egypt only two weeks previously and given infantry webbing which the Yeoman did not know how to assemble. Invalid infantrymen from the Cairo hospitals had to show the Yeomen how to put it together. With absolutely no infantry training they were packed onto boats and pushed into what became the last offensive action by the British at Gallipoli. At 3:30 on 21st Aug 1915 the whole 2nd Mounted Division (14 dismounted regiments) marched 2 miles under shellfire across the dry Salt Lake. The landscape was utterly devoid of any cover. The Division suffered about 20% casualties in the advance alone. To the amazement of the onlookers the 14 Yeomanry regiments never broke and continued to march with a measured step the whole way across. A previous attack by the 29th Div and the 11th Div (Including the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters) had failed only an hour before and the Yeomen were thrown into the battle as a last ditch attempt to save the day. On the far side of the barren plain at Chocolate Hill, the Derbyshire Yeomanry with the South Notts Hussars and the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry took the right flanking attack across an area known as Hetman Chair, straight into the Turukish main defenses and were slaughtered. The DY lost 78 men of the 326 who went in (their baptism of fire). It was a disaster from start to end. Ainslie Elliott from his number would have been a pre-war Territorial, enlisting around 1906/1907. The man in the Avatar is my Grandfather who was a DY man and would definitely have known him - also a Sgt at Gallipoli who had a narrow escape (shot through the sleeve). He was one of only 33 DY men to walk off the peninsula three months later. For extremely rare photos of this action - see here. If you need any more info, I have transcribed the DY War Diary and their History to read in parallel. I have been researching the DY for 10 years.

2. George Graney would have died in the same action. I have him as enlisting in Somercotes.

3. Arthur Oliver Holt. I have his pre 1917 number as 1575.

Finally - here is the Helles Memorial panel with Elliott and Graney's names.....taken last July.

Thanks for the additional info, I saw the reference to Steve Morse but didn't search for any link, busy getting ready for a visit to Ham House and fitted this in between watching TV, hence the skimping of some info.

I did note the DY connection for Elliot(t?) and Graney, and felt there must have been a connection, not just from the same village but maybe the families were related...

I did call up the 1901 Census for the village but didn't see anything too obvious.

I just found it an interesting challenge to see what I could find.

Sorry, MH and Steve, much of this is already known to you, I apologise for treading on your toes.

EDIT: Just noticed that the earlier post had come up twice, once with huge spacing, so now deleted in favour of (slightly) more concise version

I don't know why finding TWO Military Medal winners from one village is so hard, perhaps there's a mix of survivors here, but there are a LOT of (apparent) omissions too...

Hi

I stumbled across this forum looking for information a member of my family lost in the Great War.

My Dad's family are originally from Swanwick. Of his uncles, he claims one - John "Jack" Goodall, born in Swanwick, died in WWI. However, the memorial seems to suggest another Goodall (W.H.). William Henry was one of my dad's other uncles (also born in Swanwick), who my dad says died working at the pit, not at war.

I guess this raises the question: who is right?! And how might I find out? Where can I get death records of the two, assuming they do actually exist somewhere?

Grateful for any help.

Somehow I missed this! (computers fault  )

Thanks for the pics and extra info.

Gareth I will check my GRO service deaths.

More-

I checked my GRO refs but there are some 9 'John Goodall' of which I can only discount 2 so far. My copy of SDGW will not work on my new win7!

Does he have any other initial?

A Fryer - there is an A Fryer 2nd Canadian pioneers who had parents listed as Nottingham England. He is the only one who fits. He was born at Somercoates Derbyshire (next to Swanwick)

Martin - Graney was also mentioned in the local papers. I have Holt as dying in 1916 with number 75113.

Gareth - thanks to other forumites help, it would seem that Cpl H Goodall is our man as he was born and enlisted in Swanwick.

The 1911 census has a Henry (1888) and his brother James (1893) but no sign of a John (Jack)

You could try ancestry for this mans service records - some 30% survived.

The 1911 census has a Henry (1888) and his brother James (1893) but no sign of a John (Jack)

You could try ancestry for this mans service records - some 30% survived.

Steve m

Thanks Steve.

Yes just this week I found that our 'William Henry' on the 1901 census becomes just 'Henry' on the 1911 census, which ties in with the above.

A look on ancestry doesn't reveal much unfortunately. How did you find out that there was a Cpl H Goodall from Swanwick?

Many thanks

GG

Soldiers died in the great war list him as being born and enlisting in Swanwick.

I actually started this project after finding Arthur Hanbury on the In from the cold project. When I contacted Swawick church they only had a list of men and nothing else, I therefore decided to attempt to trace the 30 WW1 men and 9 WW2 men. I am still looking for 5 WW1 men and 2 WW2 men.

I have put details of his death cert ref on the other thread.

In fact i could do with merging the two! :D

Thanks Steve. I have found the record on findmypast.co.uk - is it worth my spending 10 credits to see it? What will it be?

GPG

The only thing to do is go for it! It may or may not have lots of info. Although if his records are ancestry, would they be the same ones on findmypast?

I have only used ancestry so do not know if it will be the same records on both. Did his medal index card have anything?

I'd be grateful if anyone can decipher the attached (from ancestry):

Many Pals know more than I, but as a skim:-

Went to France 11 Oct 1915 as Private G/7012 (someone will clarify what the "G" means) in the Royal West Kent Regiment (possibly 8th Battalion)

Sometime after 1915 he made Corporal, in the 8th Battalion (all the blue ink refers to him as a Corporal.

He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, being in a Theatre of War before 1915. It would have been incised around the rim to Pte G/7012 H. Goodall.

The British War and Victory medals would have shown his rank as Corporal G/7012 H Goodall, and certainly 8th Royal West Kents.

(These medals would have been issued after the end of the War, although he died 2nd December 1917).

The implied inference is that he was not killed in action or died of wounds, perhaps illness or accident.

The CWGC information for him:-

Name: GOODALL, Initials: H. Rank: Corporal.

Regiment/Service: Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Unit Text: 8th Bn.

Date of Death: 02/12/1917. Service No: 7012

Grave/Memorial Reference: P. V. G. 10A.

Cemetery: ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN

During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city. Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross and one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever.

In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension, where the last burial took place in April 1920. The cemetery extension contains 8,346 Commonwealth burials of the First World War (ten of them unidentified). (I'm assuming he wasn't in the labour hospital!!).

Can't see his SDGW entry, nor Pension or Service records....

G or GS means general service, ie a wartime recruit, not someone who had signed up as a regular. The prefixes weren't always used consistently, so he may appear in SDGW as GS/7012, G/7012 or plain 7012

Ah! and SDGW shows him as Died of Wounds, which is probably more correct than simply "Died"..

Is this the William H Goodall b 1889 in Swanwick, son of Henry and Eunice?

Kevin, you have the wrong A Hanbury on your list.

GPG - Start a new thread using his name and West Kent Regiment in the title.

The Medal Index Card numbers lead you to the Medal Rolls which are held at National Archives and not online.

The 8th RWK went to France in August 1915

yes, 'Frank' Hanbury is still outstanding along with -

J L Booth ; T Green MM ; W Jones and D O'Callaghan.

F Turner is probably Frederick Turner born Netherton Worcs, abode Alfreton Derbys 11 Sherwood foresters.

L R Elliott is probably Leslle Berriff Elliott RASC Husband of Laura from Ripley derbys.

Not sure why the 'Swanwick Roll of Honour has Wagner and not Wager!

I forgot to say thank you for finding Buxton.

I still have the 1901 and 1911 census to check to see if these men lived there at the time. I will also try Alfreton to SDGW search.

I will also send off your extra men to see if they can at least be named on each 11 November, even if they did not make the memorial. Of course they may be on a memorail somewhere else. I may do a visit and check - Ripley and Alfreton.

Having two threads going on this is a nightmare :D

  • 1 year later...

Good afternoon,

I'm searching all info about Pte Hanbury F. (Frank?) Nr 23417, served with the South Wales Borderers.

He was killed in action on 15th October 1918.

But I'm a little confused reading the posts above.

Is the F. Hanbury I'm searching the one on the Swanwick War Memorial, Derbyshire ?

Regards,

Bart
