high wood Posted 28 June , 2011 Share Posted 28 June , 2011 I bought this rather tatty artillery sleeve badge at Church Stoke last Sunday. I presume that it is a gunner's appointment badge of some kind, probably worn above a set of serjeant's stripes. Can anyone please tell me exactly what it signifies and when it would have been worn, i.e. is it Great War vintage? Thank you. Reverse.
wainfleet Posted 28 June , 2011 Share Posted 28 June , 2011 It was an RA distinction to wear the gun above sergeant's stripes. Not a particular distinction, just part of that corps' rank badging. This version in blue cloth would probably have been worn on full dress or undress. A brass version was worn on service dress. However, there is a Boer War period khaki drill uniform in the Artillery Museum with just such a gun over a set of stripes, so yours could be Victorian. Edit: I see there is a related discussion in the Miscellaneous subforum, entitled Sergeants Stripes.
