DH5 - single seat fighter with a backward stagger on the wings (to give the pilot the same visibility as on the DH2 pusher fighter) not generally liked but successful as a ground attack aircraft.

FE8 single seat pusher fighter (similar to the DH2) from the Royal Aircraft Factory. Not a bad design if development had not been excessively protracted so it was already out classed when it went into service

RE8 2 seat corps recce aircraft developed by the Royal Aircraft Factory - with 19 RAF squadrons by wars end. Inhibited by its Royal Aircraft Factory engine (with a Hispano Suiza engine it could really motor but only the Belgians got these) - due to be replaced by the Corp Recce version of the Bristol Fighter.

From the types stated as flown, it looks like RE8s may have been his final service machine with the BEF. The AICS didn’t form until late 1917 and was at Worthy Down (initially with its ground school at Hursley Park). Hythe was an Observers’ School of Aerial Gunnery, which is a bit of a mismatch for a pilot, unless his duty was flying trainee observers.

42 Training Depot Station was at Hounslow, engaged on training scout pilots, which would tie in with the Pup and Camel references. 212 Sqn was, by May 1919, at the Swingate Down aerodrome at Dover, as a Marine Operations unit with DH9As and Camels. His next posting was to the adjacent Guston Road aerodrome (the small ex RNAS site, to the immediate west of Swingate Down).

HQ Southern Area was at Uxbridge Depot, not an aerodrome, and this may have been a posting in preparation for demobilisation.

Given the other aeroplane types listed (Moranes, FE8s), he must have served during 1916 – is any of the earlier service record available?

The Vickers Bullet mentioned was the Vickers F.B.19 very much a rare bird as only 36 were delivered and most of these went to Salonika. Palestine and Russia. A very small number remained in Britain being used as instructor's hacks and for home defence. The view from the cockpit was poor

Both the Bristol Scout and the Bristol Monoplane were referred to as Bullets. I would suspect the latter as these were also used as hacks by instructors and some senior officers.

Thanks again. I was wondering where these'Bullets' fitted in.

The Bristol 'Bullets' were probably Scout Ds, which 65 Sqn operated in its formative period - known machines were 5294, 5326, 5575, 5588, 7035, 7056, A1752, A1788 and A5209.

Vickers 'Bullets' could only have been E.S.1s, F.B.19 Mk.Is or F.B.19 Mk.IIs. What I have on these is below and I can't see any obvious connection with the units Jackson served with:

5127 : 1 Vickers E.S.1 (100-hp Gnome) built by Vickers Ltd as a private venture and numbered in the block reserved for purchases from French manufacturers.

5127 Completed by 8.1915. Fitted with mainplanes of rounded tip 11.1915. 1 AD St Omer dd ex England 27.12.1915 by Capt R Howitt (engine 50062/B2) and numbered 5127 2.1.1916. In 1915 he was in 2 Sqn but i cant match his wounding to a sortie. Perhaps he was wounded on the ground?

The 1916 postings look odd .=to BEF 1/1/16 ,MC on 16/1/16 ,then joined a squadron on 26/116?

Captain J. L. Jackson served with N°2 at the time the Squadron was at Merville aerodrome. This aerodrome was alongside the Lys River, just in front of the Beaupré-sur-la-Lys (La Gorgue) aerodrome.
