battiscombe Posted 24 June , 2011 Share Posted 24 June , 2011 This Sgt appears in an artillery Battery photo - a Sgt of some kind - shoulder titles (it looks a bit like ASC but not convinced it is). Some kind of specialist badge over the Sgt chevrons and below crown - any suggestions welcome what this might be.. thanks. AOC Artificer - might that be possible.? Might this suggest RGA or did everyone have Artificer Sgts?

rflory Posted 25 June , 2011 Share Posted 25 June , 2011 It appears to be a Sergeant Artificer/Fitter in the AOD (crossed hammer and pliers/pinchers). Dick Flory

battiscombe Posted 25 June , 2011 Author Share Posted 25 June , 2011 thanks for all the comments. Checking a few other Battery photos I see that such Sgts appear quite often - and I have seen the hammer/pincer badge. ... Although I have one named as a 'Sgt Divall' in a photo of A/182nd Bde RFA in Jan 1916 who I cant track down any record of otherwise ..

Then I noted the reference underlined in the quote. I take it this refers to A Battery, 182nd Bde, RFA? My grandfather was with this Brigade around this time, and I'm curious about any information you may have. Gunner Victor Buccini was his name, from the London area. Off the top of my head, he was originally at Fulham (?) on his enlistment, and then transferred to Borden before shipping overseas to France. John_Hartley Posted 17 October , 2011 Share Posted 17 October , 2011 MY great uncle, Benjamin Hartley, served as an AOC staff sergeant artificer attached to 124th Bde, RFA. Pre-war, he was a mechanic of some sort.
curbrunner Posted 17 October , 2011 Share Posted 17 October , 2011 Hi Gerwyn, Appreciate your reply - I already have a copy of his MIC, but unfortunately his service record is amongst those not found. I was hoping to hear further from Battiscombe, as A Battery, 182nd Brigade, RFA picture of 'Sgt Divall' about the time he mentions, Jan. 1916, is when Victor was with the same. Was hoping he might have some more info from this time period. My focus right now is his RFA service, but curious about the Labour Corps history for a future time. I need to find the info I have for Victor (my grandfather), which is mostly with my daughter at the moment. Have taken something of a hiatus from this research in recent years, and as I recall, he had a stint of time at the Chelsea Hospital (need to confirm that). Thanks again, Al
battiscombe Posted 17 October , 2011 Author Share Posted 17 October , 2011 Al sorry that i missed this message, do you have a photo of Buccini? I have 2 photos of A Bty 162 men from before they left to France (one of Bty, and one of the NCOs and officers). Victor could well be in the Bty photo- with his comrades.. david
FROGSMILE Posted 22 October , 2011 Share Posted 22 October , 2011 There were both artillery and AOC badged Armament Artificers at that time and both were marked out by the Hammer and Pincers (insignia), but I do not know what the line of demarcation was. Somewhere, I do have a picture of Victor, but will have to track it down, as it's not ready to hand. I will locate it, and re-post with it attached. As I recall, it wasn't a great photo, scanned from a booklet prepared by my uncle, but certainly visible? Reminds me, I had meant to speak with my uncle, to see if he had a copy of the original. Thanks David! Al
curbrunner Posted 28 October , 2011 Share Posted 28 October , 2011 David, Found two images of Gunner Victor Buccini, and remembered why I needed to ask my uncle about originals. They are pretty grainy (or should I say pixelated?), but viewable, though uniform details are not at all clear. I scanned them from a circa 1988 home-published family history. Hope your Bty photo of A/182 Brigade, RFA shows him with his comrades. Would be a most interesting discovery for me. Victor was born July 22, 1898. Just past his 17th birthday when he started his service. Al
