These should be your men.

EDIT: I've amended Cartwright based on the information received in the next post.

There's a link to RJ Cholmeley at the end. I couldn't work out how an Australian lecturer with a wife in London was connected. However, I found him on the 1881 census aged 9 in Swaby.

What information would you like?

I have a photograph of the Memorial stone somewhere among my collection.

The confusion with Cartwright is due to the wrong christian names transcribed, it should read No.702 Cpl. Charles Robinson Carwright MM., CdG. of the 10/Lincolns 'Grimsby Chums' who hailed from Whitepit/Swaby. KIA 16/04/1918.

I have full details on this man, many family photographs, postcards, a family tree, among other items.

Let me know what you would like to find out.

Hi Dick,

I've amended the above list and hopefully it's now complete.

I looked up Cartwright in Duvigny's and it says that he was the son of an agricultural labourer but went to public school?

I don't think they were short of a few bob, though. Judging by the family photographs they were quite well to do.

They were family friends of the Bellamy's, a family of businessmen who had a factory selling soft drinks. On of the sons, a Captain with the same battalion was wounded on the first day of the Somme and DoW 24th July, 1916.

Among the paperwork is a black bordered death notice/letter informing the Cartwright's of Captain Bellamy's death.

Going back in time they were farmers owning land nearer to Lincoln and Hackthorn, today there are still some of the Cartwright's still owning land and farming in the area.

He was awarded the Divisional Honour card for actions during the attacks of the 9th -14th April, with the MM and Croix de Guerre, one of only two awarded to the 10/Lincs.

I think that the place he was from is Calceby it is a village just down the hill from Swaby and is often put in the same church area people came from Calceby, whitepit, driby and Swaby because the methodist chapel was there because the land owners at South Ormsby would have one on their land!

Im off to Swaby Today so I will say hello to all of them

If you have any photos I would love to see them

I have found loads about Cholemely RJ who was on oxford scholar went to south Africa and was in the 2nd Boer war then became a lecturer at Rhoades University he was an expert in greek and could speak Russian . He then went to Australia and was a founder member of the University of Queensland he was an eccentric fella in a straw boater and baggy trousers. He was in his 40s when he was turned down by the ozzy army so came back to England joined the cheshire regt as a capt and was an intelligence brigadier near messines where he won his MC he then went up to Murmansk after armistice and was aboard ship during the fighting on the aftermath of the Russian revolution and the fighting there, He was overhauling the guns on a dark and rough night in Aug 1919 when he was washed overboard and drowned. He is remembered at Archangel.

What afella

I am hoping now to find out more about Charles cartwright and the others

Thanks for all your help again lads

Albert Barker was my nans brother. If you can let me know what information you need, I can see if I can help.

Whilst I'm here, could anyone tell me how to find out how to find out how he died? The only information I can find is that he died of "wounds". Is there a more accurate record held somewhere?
