stephen p nunn Posted 22 May , 2011 Share Posted 22 May , 2011 Evening all. Could anyone tell me what an officer's cap badge for the Somerset Light Infantry (TF) 6th Battalion would have looked like circa 1917? Many thanks SPN maldon

FROGSMILE Posted 22 May , 2011 Share Posted 22 May , 2011 Evening all. Could anyone tell me what an officer's cap badge for the Somerset Light Infantry (TF) 6th Battalion would have looked like circa 1917? Many thanks SPN maldon The officers' badge would have been in a bronze finish known as Officers Service Dress (OSD) pattern and not in the nickel silver as shown by Piorun, which is an other ranks (ORs) badge. The 3rd Reserve battalion had a laurel wreath in place of the Jellalabad honour on the top scroll and the 4th and 5th battalions (Territorials) has the campaign honour South Africa 1900-02 in the same place. The 6th battalion was a Service (war raised) battalion so I assume you meant the 5th who were indeed Territorials as mentioned.

He started off in the 4th but then transferred to the 6th so where do you think that leaves us badge wise? Many thanks. S.

Many thanks. S. In the 4th Territorial battalion he would have worn the bronze OSD badge with South Africa 1900-02 on the top scroll, but in the 6th Service battalion (ironically) he would have been entitled to wear a bronze OSD badge with the honour Jellalabad on the top scroll. Whether he troubled to do so is another matter. It was the illogicality of such circumstances that led to the Territorials later changing to the same badge as the Regular and Service battalions. max7474 Posted 24 May , 2011 Share Posted 24 May , 2011 By 1917 the 4th and 5th TF Bns had been given permission to wear the Regular badge. This change to Regualr badges was policy across all the TF at the time. If he joined at this time then he would have been wearing the Jellabad one. If he joined the 4th Bn before 1917 then he might well have kept on wearing his SA battlehonour badge. The 6th would always have worn the Jellabad one so he probably was wearing that one.
