Guest BAK Posted 6 July , 2004 Share Posted 6 July , 2004 I am researching a member of the Navy for the first time, Could some one please point me in ways this differs for researching a solider. The chap I am, researching is Petty Officer Edward Hartnell joined in 1917, was on board HMS Warspite + was on several aircraft carriers. Did at least fifteen years service. Served at Battle of Jutland. Edward Hartnell lived in dorset/somerset area. Worked on GWR railway as signalman until retirement.

DirtyDick Posted 6 July , 2004 Share Posted 6 July , 2004 Unlike the Army, Navy records are far more easy to research at the PRO/NA under section ADM188 - service history - since they did not suffer in WW2. It will list ships etc. up to 1929. Provided you know his number or approximate date of enlistment he should be easy to find. A researcher should get these for you for between £5-10 as they are so easily found and copied. Richard
