Steven Broomfield Posted 7 May , 2011 Share Posted 7 May , 2011 Regimental History (Lt Col C C R Murphy) deals with the period up to 1st July briefly: Into billets near bethune on 4th January, proceeding to the Lillers area after a fortnight. Mid-Feby, in the line near Sailly-Labourse. German raids on The Hairpin, and rifle grenades and snipers were aggressive and caused "some loss and considerable annoyance". On 24th April they proceeded to Lillers by train, marching into Corps reserve at Floringhem and into 1st Army manouevre area at Estree Blanche. Beginning of June to Mazingarbe, then south to Albert, arriving Henincourt 1st July. On 3rd July they took part in the assault on Ovillers where, although getting to the enemy 3rd Line, they were cut off and lost heavily. All Company Commanders were killed, and only one Major and three subalterns escaped unscathed. Total casualties 470, of whom 3 Captains and 9 Lieutenants or Second Lieutenants were killed, with the MO missing.
