GRANVILLE Posted 26 April , 2011 Share Posted 26 April , 2011 I've recently had this photo brought to my attention. It shows new recruits working on the practice trenches at Redmires Camp near Sheffield, in (I presume) 1914. When I first glanced at the picture, I thought it was circa WW2 on account of the headgear worn, but then I noticed the puttees. I'd rather presumed peaked caps would have been worn. Can anyone advise why they are not, and what do these caps say about the recruits? Dave
max7474 Posted 26 April , 2011 Share Posted 26 April , 2011 They look like Kitchener Blues side caps. They were easier to make than peaked caps and thus worn with the temporary uniforms in 1914-15.

wainfleet Posted 27 April , 2011 Share Posted 27 April , 2011 The emergency Kitchener blue uniform was worn with both sidecaps and peaked caps. A point of nomenclature: it's Kitchener Blue (singular); Hospital Blues (plural).
