IanA Posted 19 April , 2011 Share Posted 19 April , 2011 It was certainly not common but Lord Derby did issue the first volunteers in the 'Liverpool Pals' battalions with silver cap badges.

FROGSMILE Posted 20 April , 2011 Share Posted 20 April , 2011 I seem to recall that the Cardiff City battalion of the Welsh Regiment did something similar, but I cannot remember if that was just for collar badges.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 20 April , 2011 Share Posted 20 April , 2011 Officers of some regiments would have had Silver or Silver Plated Badges,{before OSD Badges became commonplace} Officers uniform was Private Purchase.

Yes, I believe the Rifle Brigade, Cameronians and Royal Irish Rifles, as well as some of the Highland Regiments were all well known for doing that. Certainly silver badges exist for them in significant numbers.
Rob Bulloch Posted 21 April , 2011 Share Posted 21 April , 2011 Alan...Although not issued silver badges were not uncommon with soldiers in Highland Regiment or any Regiment for that matter that served in India to have badges made by bazaar silversmiths or artisans, they would take a cap badge and make a mold and cast the badge in coin silver. I have one such badge in my collection it is heavy, very nice on the front although there is some wear to the high points, but leaves a bit to be desired on the back, it is very rough with file marks and such. Aye Rob.

tony paley Posted 22 April , 2011 Share Posted 22 April , 2011 The Royal Artillery, Horse, Garrison and Field usually had brass badges, although some Volunteer and Territorial units had white metal. the same with earlier large helmet plates.
