4thGordons Posted 17 April , 2011 Share Posted 17 April , 2011 In a recent thread S>S posted some excellent photos of Great War Era blade bayonets and ran an identification competition. In a shameless spin off from that....how about a rifle ID? can you match the bayonets in S>S's pictures to the rifles here? Pictures are not great I just trawled what I had and standardized. As there is some duplication in the bayonets in the competion and, as I don't actually have examples of all the rifles for which bayonets were pictured - I have included a couple of wild-card great war rifles for which the bayonets were not pictured - just to keep things interesting. Where a bayonet will fit several rifles (eg the P1888 MLM, MLE, CLLE, RIC C, MH-E etc)I have pictured a couple of options. No complex scoring (maths is not my strong point) - but can the bayonets (numbered by S>S) be matched to the following weapons (lettered) A B C D E F G H I

Pete1052 Posted 17 April , 2011 Share Posted 17 April , 2011 Uh, a couple of them look like Enfields, with a Martini-Henry and a Mauser as well. Maybe even an M1917.

I assume you are including the M1903 in the Mausers?
Pete1052 Posted 17 April , 2011 Share Posted 17 April , 2011 Oh yeah, one of them too. I saw a WW II manufacture Remington M1903 with the old-style ladder-type rear sight on sale about seven years ago for around $900. It was in factory-new unissued condition, complete with M1907 leather sling. I didn't buy it because I don't do much with the guns I already own, so another one would only be superfluous. With a Bausch & Lomb rangefinder scope it would have made believers of the Taliban had I gotten a job to go there.

shippingsteel Posted 18 April , 2011 Share Posted 18 April , 2011 (edited) I guess I'll play along - better finish off what I started.? Perhaps we should just ID the rifles first, then the bayonets will look after themselves, right.? Anyway here's my list for cross referencing - can't guarantee its correct though.! A___SMLE Mk.III B___CLLE C___GEW 88 D___GEW 98 E___MLE (modified.?) F___M1903 Springfield G___Martini-Henry Mk.IV H___Ross Mk.III I ___KAR 98 J___P1914 K___M1917 L___SMLE Mk.I M___Chilean Mauser (huh.?) shippingsteel Posted 18 April , 2011 Share Posted 18 April , 2011 M___Chilean Mauser (huh.?) Perfectly valid British issue WWI rifle, S>S. Regards TonyE Okay, if that is the case why no Arisaka.? Also the Germans made use of many of the 'export' Mausers that were awaiting shipment at the start of the war, including many Sth American types. When they found themselves short they also used a variety of foreign arms that were bordering on obsolesence, so the list could virtually be indefinite .... V Excellent job on the ID's there Mr S>S. I suppose if I were pedantic (moi?) I could ask for the model years on the "Turkish Mauser" "Carcano" etc etc but otherwise spot on all the way. Actually the reason I included the Chilean was (as I said in the early post) "and, as I don't actually have examples of all the rifles for which bayonets were pictured - I have included a couple of wild-card great war rifles for which the bayonets were not pictured - just to keep things interesting." You are quite right though - There are lots of others that could be included and if all types and sub-types were to be added it would indeed be a very long list. SiegeGunner Posted 18 April , 2011 Share Posted 18 April , 2011 Saludos cordiales 'Cheers!', toasted in orange squash, if I'm not mistaken ... I wonder if S>S has a bayonet to fit the exceedingly rare Finnish Mosin Nagant mini-carbine carried by the elves on Santa's sleigh ... Jesting aside, many thanks to Chris and S>S for sharing pics of their extremely impressive collections.
TonyE Posted 19 April , 2011 Share Posted 19 April , 2011 ...and here is a picture for both Chris and S>S, a group of British merchant seaman mostly armed with Ross Mark III rifles, but a couple with Chilean Model 1912s. Also packet label for the ammunition. Regards TonyE
