Hello to all Pals.

I have just returned from a 3 day tour guiding a lovely Australian couple around the Somme & Ypres. Yesterday we visited Zillebeke en-route to hill 60 (sad to see building has started there). I suggested we call into the bakers and pick up a sandwich for lunch. The conversation went as follows:

Do you have any sandwiches?

No.

Is there somewhere in the village where we can buy a sandwich?

One moment sir.

The lady picks up the telephone and has a conversation in Flemish.

OK sir. If you buy the bread for your sandwiches here & take it to Phillipe the butcher he will make your sandwiches.

We buy the bread, fresh & crispy for €1.5

Following her directions we arrive at Phillipe the butcher.

What would you like in your sandwich?

Ham & cheese please.

Some egg, salad and mayo? he suggested.

That would be lovely, we replied.

No problem sir.

He took our bread and went off to the back of the shop with a few slices of ham and cheese & returned with our made up sandwiches. Very well filled.

Total cost with 2 cans of orange juice and a bottle of water.

€9.60

My Austrailian couple were well pleased.

Great value, perfect service and a couple of new friends.

I'll will be going back there!

Regards

John

Would that happen in the UK? I guess not somehow.

I had a very similar experience in southern Ireland a few years ago. While on holiday with the family we stopped in a pub and asked if they did food. No was the reply but what would you like?. We said just a sandwich would be fine. Whereupon the landlady took a fiver from the till dispatched her husband to the shop. Twenty minutes later We had a tray of sandwichesand were only charged the same fiver.

Excellent service. You can get similar service in parts of England but perhaps not in those parts of England which are no longer really England.

I can't help noticing that the butcher appears to have done rather better out of the transaction than the baker — who hopefully gets a little something in return for the referrals. Very cheering to know that there are still places where local businesses pull together.
