SMG65 Posted 4 April , 2011 Share Posted 4 April , 2011 Can anyone tell me the regiment of the above soldier - possibly Royal Fusiliers or a London Regiment battalion?

SMG65 Posted 4 April , 2011 Author Share Posted 4 April , 2011 Could it be 1/7 London Battalion, the photo is of a friends Gt Grandfather who was killed and they think he was 1/7th but I seem to remember their badge having the 7 on it. SteveE Posted 4 April , 2011 Share Posted 4 April , 2011 Badge is Royal Fusiliers or 1st to 4th Battalions London Regiment, it's too big and the flames the wrong shape for 7th Battalion London Regiment. Regards Steve
squirrel Posted 4 April , 2011 Share Posted 4 April , 2011 Could it be a simple misinterpretation of 1st and 7th? The chap is a Royal Fusilier. The Regular Royal Fusiliers were the 7th Regiment of Foot prior to 1881 and it was not uncommon for the regular regiments to still refer to themselves by their old numbers. So, reference to his regiment as the 1st 7th may mean the first battalion Royal Fusiliers. Just a thought.

Sean The Royal Fusiliers had a 7th Battalion, but I do not think it had second or third line units so it would not have been known as first seventh (1/7) : 7th (Extra Reserve) Battalion August 1914 : in Artillery Place, Finsbury. Landed at Le Havre 24 July 1916. 27 July 1916 : joined the 190th Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division.
Steven Broomfield Posted 4 April , 2011 Share Posted 4 April , 2011 It didn't: as you say, it was an Extra Reserve battalion, not a TF one, so no second line.
