If he is included in the memorial, he should be in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database. The only H. Spencer with a M.M. in CWGC is

H. Spencer 26350 Private, East Surrey Regiment, died 21 August 1918. Soldiers Died in the Great War lists Herbert Spencer, of Woodford, Northants,

of the East Surrey Regiment with a death date of 21 August 1918. Northants is definitely not Flintshire, but no other H. Spencers that I can find have the M.M. There is a service record on Ancestry.com for Herbert Spencer, enlisted 1914, birth parish Duston, Northants (Ancestry says "Ruston"), born "abt. 1895." The 1901 Census confirms

that Spencer was born at Duston, the son of William & Avis Spencer; his birth was registered at Northampton in July 1895. So, either there was another

H. Spencer with the M.M. who was a casualty but not listed with the M.M. by CWGC, or we need to discover a link of the Northants Spencer to Buckley,

Flintshire. 26350 Herbert Spencer's M.M. award is listed in the London Gazette, 4 October 1918 (issue 30940, page 11837); no citation is included,

only a listing, as is customary for gazettings of M.M. awards.

How sure are you of the H?

Have you ruled out Albert Spencer Pte 43899 RWF of 131 Mold Rd, Buckley. His MM is in LG 29/8/1918. He was KIA with 17th Bn 30/8/1918

i think youve hit the nail on head there Hywyn.

i have albert spencer on the index from buckley but H spencer on the memorial.

i can see how an A and a H can get mistaken. Maybe he was known more by a nickname?

is there any info on albert spencers MM ?

It's A Spencer on the North Wales Arch at Bangor. I'm assuming that you are local to Buckley re what's on theirs?

http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/arch/DSCF4401.htm

Didn't look at all his papers. General gist is that he went out Jan 1917 to the 9th Bn and was with then until he was wounded in the elbow on 23/4/1918 (the 9th were caught up in the German Offensive. This resulted in him being shipped back to the UK. He's back in France with the 17th Bn mid July 1918 and is KIA with them 30/8/1918. The period mid July to the LG entry seems rather small for the usual time period between the deed and the LG entry so I would think (but not know for sure) that it's for some action whilst with the 9th Battalion and possibly during the German Offensive.

Maybe there's something on his card at Hawarden RO or is that the index you refer to?

Well, that H can't be any clearer can it and short of being able to link the Herbert Spencer from Trelawneys' post above to Buckley it looks like a typo(!) by the stonemason.

Great site. Lots of work gone/going into it. Are those in the RoH without a link because your in the process of updating or because you can't link them to the area?

Courtesy of Geoffs Engine but you may already be aware of them

many thanks hywyn

the names without a link i`m updating all the time, trying to make sure i definately

get the right people. Some on your list i,ve not been able to match as yet, so thanks for that.

i must admit that i would be nowhere near where i am with the site without the help and assistance of

of all the amazing people out there and their vast wealth of knowledge on this site and also on other forums.

only found out yesterday that the r.w.f. archive is moving to wrexham so that will be easily accessible for me

to do some more research.

many thanks again !!

Albert Spencer appears to be the right man rather than "H. Spencer" for the reasons cited by Hywyn here as well as SDGW: Albert Spencer, KIA 30 August 1918 F/F

birthplace: Wanbury, Cheshire; residence at enlistment: Buckley, Flints

CWGC says his parents were the lateThomas B. Spencer & Elizabeth Spencer of 131 Mold Road, Buckley.

BMD has Albert - Spencer, birth registered 2nd Quarter 1895 at Nantwich, Cheshire (corroborates CWGC listing of his age as 23 when he was killed)

Appears to be a stonemason's typo given that Vico's site index lists "A. Spencer."
