Jim,

from notes that I have the 9th Bn HLI on the above date:

[10 April 1918: transit - about 2 miles northeast to Aubigny (about 10 miles west of Arras)]

The Battalion paraded at 9am to proceed to a new area but was stopped by counter orders and returned to billets.

6.30pm: Orders received from 100th Bde to be ready to move at ½ hrs notice.

7.45pm: Orders received to move off at 8.20pm and entrain at AUBIGNY. Cooker and water carts to accompany the battalion. Remainder of transport to move by road at 8am tomorrow.

8.50pm: Battalion moves off and arrives at AUBIGNY about 10.15pm.

ypres: You were asking for information on the 4th June 1917. There were no deaths that day, so I simply extended the search date for a week forward and found one man with West Sussex connection had died on the 8th.... Calais was not the front line so a wounded casualty could have been brought back to a hospital in Calais by the 8th, and then succumbed to his wound/disease etc.... hence my "suggestion" (note the question mark!) that he died from wounds sustained on the 4th, to presumably tie in with a date on the plaque you have found. No corroboration, just a surmise.
