Old Tom Posted 13 February , 2011 Share Posted 13 February , 2011 Of late I have read of the definaition of the requirement for field artillery in the years leading up to 1914 and a little of the development of naval vessels in that period. I am intrigued by the range of naval guns, say about 4" to 14" and the development of field and siege artillery, with howitzers up to 12" and so on. My understanding is that ordnance was produced by two or three commercial companies and one ordnance factory. I would like to have an appreciation of the manufacturing processes of such pieces of ordnace and some idea of how the range of calibres came to be selected. Can anyone point me towards published material bearing on these matters? Old Tom

nigelfe Posted 14 February , 2011 Share Posted 14 February , 2011 Vol X of the Official History of the Ministry of Munitions is a reasonable starting point.
