Hard to see,Rob.

They both look German but I'm guessing the one on the left looks like this;-

I'm probably wrong but,it may be from the Birmingham Metals & Munitions Co. Mk.Vii(7) ball cordite charged ,made 1916.

The cordite is a good weed killer.Together with the pointy mk.7 bullet, they are great for putting holes in things;-

As for the German round,I can't help you.Sorry.

Dave.

The left case is Britsh .303 Mk7 as dave said.

The German round is a 7.92x57.

I think the headstamp works out as

S67 is what the brass alloy is made from 67% copper

S is the maker, Spandau Ammunition Factory

11 November

15 1915

Hi Rob. As should be obvious from his pics, Dave's advice is the next-best thing to a hole in the head ... :D

Re the German cartridge, and at the risk of being shot down by my more knowledgeable friends, S is for Spandau, 67 is the specification of the brass the case is made of, 11/15 is the date of manufacture, November 1915, and S is for Spitzer, the conventional jacketed pointed German bullet.

Edit: B&gger — Garron got in while I was typing. But he missed the final S for Spitzer, so I think I should get a point (!) for that.

As Dave has pointed out, the .303 is a Ball Mark VII made by Birmingham Metals and Munitions Co. The reason for the "J" headstamp rather than the normal "B" for that manufacturer was because the case was made at the Waltham (Essex) facility that was the old F.Joyce works before they were purchased by BMMCo.

...and OK, you can have a point for getting it right Mr.S G (although there is nothing pointy about Mr.Siege Gunner!)
