bluedog Posted 7 February , 2011 Share Posted 7 February , 2011 Pals Need some serious help here for a Brit friend with limited information. As I am a complete novice as to British battalions and Divisions in WW1 I hope that you can put yourselves in my shoes when I was asked to help a good friend on this matter. Was Pte. Augustus Harman No. 682626 in the 2nd. battalion Royal Fusiliers or the 47th. Division , Territorial force of the 1/2nd. London Division. Questions: When did he sign up where did he sign up Any history of the unit he served in His DOD , KIA is listed as 07-06-1917 which puts him in the Battle of Messines. what sector did he serve in this area , was it the Ypre-Comines area? Any Information whatsoever and maps would be a great help as my Brit. friend is travelling with the Grandson of Pte. Harman this coming Friday to Messines Ridge. As you have noticed this is a combined question as I was unsure where to post it , either research a Soldier or the Western Front so please excuse any mistake in posting area. Your speedy response would be most appreciated as they intend to travel from UK this thursday, 10-02-2011. Many many thanks and sorry for the rush. Guest Posted 7 February , 2011 Share Posted 7 February , 2011 Hi Peter. There are at least 24 pages of his service record available on Ancestry. If you input 5421, into the ' Number ' box. Cheers Mike
SWorrall Posted 7 February , 2011 Share Posted 7 February , 2011 Augustus Alfred HARMAN, Private, 682686 22nd (County of London) battalion (The Queen's), 142nd Brigade, 47th (2/1st London) division. Not a Fusilier at all. Born: Lambeth Enlisted: Southwark Residence: West Square, London S.E. KIA, France & Flanders. From SDGW and LLT. Yes, they were at Messines. 47th Division was on the northern front, roughly between Hill 60 / the Caterpillar and the Ypres/Comines canal. 142 Bde were north of the canal. 22nd were on the left of the Bde, and therefore of the division during the attack of the 7th June. The 24th battalion were to their right. They gained all their objectives by the appointed hour and the 21st & 23rd passed through them for the second phase. PM me for a really useful map segment. DRIFTER Posted 16 February , 2011 Share Posted 16 February , 2011 47th Division information that may be of some use. With the help of this forum I've gathered quite a bit of information regarding my grandfather KIA 4th July 1917 with 1/17th London (141 Brigade 47th Division) and in doing so also gathered information regarding other units of 47th. Unfortunately because I'm away at sea I don't have the information with me and have very limited access the internet or e-mails. Once I get home I can PM with anything possibly useful I may have if you let me know what you are looking for. If anyone has anything that might be useful to my research on 1/17th London please pass it on. Sorry but it may be some time before I can respond. For what it's worth I believe my grandfather (Menin gate - no known grave) may have been killed somewhere near a line between south of Battle Wood at O.6.a25.50 and I.36.b.2.3 near Klein Zillebeke which places the 47th very close to the Hill 60 area.
