Dorsetshire Regiment MCs

I am preparing an article on the fight at Ahwaz where eight Dorset men and one RA man gained DCMs.

Their citations are easy to find on the LG pages.

But in the LG of 29 October 1915, page 10729, two Dorset Subalterns, H.J. Baillie and E.L. Stephenson, are awarded MCs. I could not find citations.

As this is the page where other Ahwaz MCs (RGA & RE) are listed, can anyone advise me if Baillie and Stephenson were at Ahwaz.

Also were any Dorsets killed at Ahwaz?

Thank you. Harry

Information from " The History of the Dorset Regiment 1914-1919" Before the end of January 1915 troops had to be dispatched up the Karun river to Ahwaz to protect the pipeline.

The Dorsets provided the first instalement, 30 men under Lt Baillie being sent up river on the gunboat Comet.

You are obvously aware of the action at Ahwaz so I will not describe the action ,however thier is a footnote to the page that Lt Baillie was recommended for a VC but was awarded the MC.

Also it states that only one man was wounded at Ahwaz.

2nd Lt E L Stephenson was awarded his MC for actions on the 17th November 1914 in the advance and attack on Sahil.

Hope this assists

Malcolm

This is really good stuff - just what I was hoping for.

I do not like to proceed in articles like this (that involve the breaking and running of another unit) until I have as many facts at hand as possible.

I will put a notice on GWF when the article is published.
