Dashers1 Posted 12 January , 2011 Share Posted 12 January , 2011 Artillery experts, I have a shell case that was brought back from Belgium/France during WW1 by my grandfather and I was wondering if any of the experts out there could shed light on the markings that are inscribed on the base of the case. 13Pr (Obvious),S1915 (Obvious),DF,CF,77AC,295,50,(A),I,15,9,6,F,CO There are some other small undistiguisable marks that I cannot make out. I will try and take a photo of the base and post in the next day or so, hopefully that will make more sense. Regards ChrissA
TonyE Posted 12 January , 2011 Share Posted 12 January , 2011 As you say, we really need a decent photograph to be able to interpret the stamps properly, as their relation to one another is important. However, based on the information you give and the caveat that I have not actually seen the case, I offer the following: "CF" indictes that is has been filled once with a full charge of Cordite. "DF" Could this actually be "PF", which would mean it had been filled with a full charge of blackpowder, indicating a possible second loading as a blank. "15, 9, 6" Could this be "16" rather than just "6"? If so that is the date of loading "S" means the case has been schleroscoped. (like X-ray) "(A)" If this is an "A" in a circle then it means the case has been annealed. "F.CO" could be part of the manufacturers mongram. Other numbers will be case lot and loading lot numbers. Old Tom Posted 12 January , 2011 Share Posted 12 January , 2011 May I nit-pick? Should not the item be referred as a cartridge case? Old Tom
