HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 10 January , 2011 Share Posted 10 January , 2011 It was one of the number of Allied awards for Gallantry & Distinguished Conduct, that were available to UK & Commonwealth Forces,in addition to Imperial Honours, often awarded for lesser degree Brave Acts etc, where a UK award would have been unwarranted,we in an "Inter ~ Alia" arrangement granted UK awards to Foreign Allied Nationals. If the C de G is named then it is a privately engraved example, usually on the Crosses arms.A Certificate/Citation would normally be forwarded with the award & most are promulgated, along with other Foreign Awards,in the London Gazette,in a list of awards.{No Citations}

rflory Posted 2 February , 2011 Share Posted 2 February , 2011 Madman: The French Croix de Guerre was awarded with different dates depending on the year it was awarded. For the Great War the dates included: 1914-1915; 1914-1916;1914-1917; and 1914-1918. Dick Flory

Any idea of the numbers of each year issued? For example is the 1914-1918 one rarer than the 1914-1915? Dave
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 2 February , 2011 Share Posted 2 February , 2011 Officially awarded & Gazetted CdeG with the "1914~1918" Reverse to Imperial recipients ARE scarcer than other year combinations, but as with most French awards they can or could be directly purchased from the French Mint,so the 1914~18 reverse is probably a more common self awarded type!! # HB
