Could you please explain your nomenclature for the map descriptions.

Have you had a look at the DCS / DOS collections ? Might be more fruitful than the army survey ?

There are proper formal archival organisations for accessing this stuff -- not sure if they are advanced enough to offer full digital scans ?

IF you are in the UK then you should be able to give them a ring and find out.

I am not sure what you require the maps for ?

1956 means that it is not of WWI vintage --

So if there is not anything of an historical nature in 1956 ? why not a much later more modern map ie something like a 1:50000 or even more detailed satellite imagery ?

In fact why not just use Google Earth ? patchy in places but in others better than a 1:10000

As far as I am aware no Americans did any survey work in any British Colonies ( Stanley was a Brit ) -- although the USGS was busy in latter years. So do some searching in the UK ............

Ask these guys

Defence Surveyors Association http://www.defencesurveyors.org.uk/

I am pretty sure they can find what you are looking for.

As a footnote ......

The National Archives

British Trench Map Atlas

http://www.britishtrenchmaps.com/information.html

Peter Chasseaud has assiduously pursued over many years.

This present work is not only a very readable account of the complex history of the cartography of the Western Front,

it is also a challenge to collectors and map librarians to help fill out some of the gaps in our knowledge of the mapping which still exist.

It also stands as a model for the work which remains to be done on the mapping of the other theatres of war in the Middle East and Africa.

I still dont know what you are looking for, the major regions were mapped by the British from around 1916 onwards and many of these are still valid. I use them when I go to TZ anyway.

Here is a nice reference for the OP as to what is available ( especially if they are in Aus )

http://catalogue.nla.../Record/2187568

Topographic map series of Tanzania showing international and provincial boundaries, roads, railways, mosques and populated areas.

Relief shown by contours, form lines and spot heights.

Some sheets issued by the Directorate under its earlier name: Directorate of Colonial Surveys as D.C.S. 22.

Some sheets issued by General Staff, Geographical Section of the War Office as G.S.G.S. 4789 and others issued by the D. Survey, War Office and Air Ministry.

Some sheets have added series designation D.O.S. 422. Title varies slightly.

Each sheet variously includes boundary diagram, grid reference diagram, index to adjoining sheets, reliability diagram and sheet history.

Each sheet is named and numbered individually.

In 1964 Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar and became the jurisdiction of Tanzania.

This topographic map series covers the post and pre-merger period.

Therefore Tanganyika changed its name to Tanzania which is reflected in the change of title.

The Directorate of Colonial Surveys started a photogrammetric 1:50 000 scale series in 1947.

This map series also consists of preliminary plot maps.

I wonder if these are available in digital format ?

I want to go to Tansania later on and do his trip.

OK Coltroep,

If you get to Kilosa be sure to make the police chief know you are in town if you are photographing, in fact get a permit before you go from the embassy.

I spent a good hour in his compnay before he relented and let me take photographs in the town. He smoked all my cigarettes too!!

When have you been there?

Came you from the Kilimanjaro?

The google map is not so clear?

Do you have a recent map of that area?

See you

KONDOA mentioned the link for the holdings at the National Archives

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=3&CATID=13359&SearchInit=4&SearchType=6&CATREF=WO+300

IF you require modern maps I pointed out a library link above.

You could also purchase current maps from ths place.

http://www.cartographic.com/

Why not try the Belgian National Archives they are sure to have some interesting stuff

In fact I think that there is a specialised museum for Africa there in Belgium somewhere

Give it a try -- you might come up with something on your own.

Coeltrop,

I flew into JRO (Kilimanjaro) airport and then drove down the Pare Mountains through Korogwe and then Handeni, Morogoro and to Kilosa, its a long drive but good to do.

I have a couple of maps:

http://www.stanfords.co.uk/stock/tanzania-122908/

and

http://www.mapsworldwide.com/sku_8304.htm

Thes maps are OK but a bit of imagination is required due to the scale being a bit small.
