Peter and Ellen Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Hi Folks, The attached medal as been found at an antique shop in the State of New South Wales in Australia. The new owner was fascinated by it, purchased it, and now seeks to find where it came from and what it was issued for. It has no markings whatsoever on the reverse face. I have been googling like mad but cannot find anything. I was expecting the possibility of a vessel of some kind but no luck. Hoping someone may have seen something like this before. The time period that it is from is unknown. Best regards, Peter
rksimpson Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Hi Peter Could it be a misprint of Arras, the town- http://www.1914-1918.../guidearras.htm and http://www.1914-1918.net/bat18.htm regards Robert
Admin spof Posted 5 January , 2011 Admin Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Peter A stab in the dark but could it be something Turkish or Armenian related to the Aras River? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aras_River Glen
59165 Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 I reckon its 'wounded on the 'arris'.
PhilB Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Looks like a joke piece to me! Rather like "Shot in the Balkans". I hope not as it would be in very poor taste with so many wounded.
59165 Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Looking closer,it looks like a coin thats had a hole drilled through then a loop added. The ribbon looks like a French type.
Peter and Ellen Posted 5 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Hi Folks, Thanks for your suggestions. I must admit that it crossed my mind that it may have been a homemade or private madalion but the condition of the ribbon suggests "some age" plus the laurel leaves....a lot of work. I will run it past a French historian. Much appreciated, Peter
PhilB Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Peter, you can`t assume that the the "medal" and the ribbon are actually related!
Doc2 Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Interestingly, there was another copy of this medal for sale on E-Bay, though with a different ribbon. The medals themselves look the same, though, so not a "one-off". squirrel Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 WW2 Defence Medal ribbon on that one! I incline to the views as expressed by 59165 and PhilB in posts 4 and 5.
James Blonde Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 The way the ribbon ring is mounted leads me to believe that this is no way an official military medal at all, looks like it was cobbled together in a back yard. The medal itself looks to have been cast in brass? Can you post a picture of the other side and give dimensions? And do you really think that a medal for those who were "shot" as opposed to those who were gassed, wounded by shrapnel, bayoneted, etc..etc.. regardless of location would have been issued. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 It looks to be a "Tongue in Cheek" very unofficial play on words "award" probably handed around by Soldiers themselves notorious for such japes to pals in receipt a a nick in the "Butt~Ocks" as one Forrest Gump once stated Typical Tommy Humour
Tom Tulloch-Marshall Posted 5 January , 2011 Share Posted 5 January , 2011 Aris is Cockney rhyming slang for ****, and websites such as Babylon are defining aras as Australian slang for "bottle", or "****". Almost certainly a joke item. Tom **** went in as A.....R.....S.....E
Peter and Ellen Posted 8 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 8 January , 2011 Hi Folks, Yes, I am going to have to inform the person concerned that it appears not to have a known "official standing" but may be a limited run "back-shed" job. Will let them know about the one on eBay. In regard to Babylon, vely interlesting, as I grew up in a working class suburb in Melbourne, Australia, and I would have heard it being thrown around. Well, I heard plenty of others but never this one. I really appreciate your time and the suggestions you have made, tks, Peter
