Hi,

I don't understand this and wondered if anyone could help please?

post-38480-022411400 1293989375.jpg

"Bde. route march with 1st Line (loaded)" ??

The next couple of lines make no sense to me? Then

"2 carts to form Bde. reserve. M/G fired on range. 1 man hos[pital]."

Cheers

John

10 men per coy with btn ?AA reserve section

?? reserve withdrawn.

"Ten men per company with battalion Small Arms Ammunition (SAA) reserve" (then full stop believe).

It might help if you could post whole of the diary entry as far as is possible, as well as indicating the unit. Context is likely to be very important.

Don't know if it helps but SAA usually means Small Arms Ammunition usually in an R(F)A context but it makes sense with 'carts' which were used to transport Vickers.

Context and date might help i.e. was it pre October 1915 before formation of the MGC when (usually) each Bn had two MGs; so does this entry describe collecting ammunition and test firing the guns while out of the line?

The War Diary entry is from 1st Bn Connaught Rangers, 7th Ferozepore Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division, early October 1914, a couple of days after they had arrived at Marseilles.

Lots of parades, route marches, musketry practise taking place. Baggage, Supply and Cook wagons drawn for the battalion, 6 ASC drivers attached.

Brigade route march with 1st line (transport) loaded. Ten men per company with battalion small arms ammunition reserve. Section (? Odd letters or does he mean sectional) reserve withdrawn. Two carts to form brigade reserve. Machine gun fired on range. One man (to) hospital.

First line transport were the ammunition wagons or carts, and if appropriate medical and engineers wagons or carts. Second line transport was baggage and stores wagons or carts, and a percentage of the units ammunition and medical and engineers wagons or carts.
